In the Karen language, Kawthoolei is the name of a
mythical homeland in eastern Burma(Myanmar). The Karen
people have been struggling for control of this land
for nearly 60 years. This conflict between the Burmese
military regime and the Karen National Union is now
considered the world's longest running civil war.
There are numerous reports of ethnic cleansing, and
hundreds of thousands of Burmese and ethnic refugees
have flooded western Thailand, yet this conflict is
often overlooked by the western media.
Produced along the Thai-Burma border in the refugee
camps, medical clinics, and rebel military bases,
Kawthoolei attempts to demystify the complicated
history of Burma's ethnic groups, while focusing on
Karen women activists working for non-violent
solutions.
This documentary features interviews with Nobel
nominees Zipporah Sein and Dr. Cynthia Maung, as well
as several other women activists, observers,
humanitarian workers, and refugees.

Currently there exists in the state of Wyoming an information office for the Republic of Kawthoolei, the official state of the Karen National Union and that of the Karen people. Mr.Thomas Bleming has been appointed by Colonel Nerdah Mya, son of the late Karen General Bo Mya to oversee the operations of this office and to assist in lobbying for official diplomatic recognition of the Republic of Kawthoolei by the United States.Mr. Bleming has written a book about the Karen National Liberation Army and the Republic of Kawthoolei which is a first of its kind and this book will be out in the Fall of 2007. The books title is "War in Karen Country". Mr. Bleming was personally invited by Colonel Nerdah Mya to visit his country recently and he was permitted to film and interview the officers and men of the 6th Brigade of the Karen National Liberation Army . Mr. Bleming was ,prior to leaving for the United States given a post in the Karen National Union as Colonel Nerdah's personal representative in the United States and was made a full member in the Karen National Liberation Army.
